Court rejects bail pleas of three accused in Zubeen Garg death case

A court in Guwahati on Friday rejected the bail petitions of three accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, with the singer’s wife urging that no bail be granted until the case is concluded.

The Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court fixed February 13 as the next date of hearing, special public prosecutor Ziaul Kamar said.

The three accused who had sought bail are Garg’s band member Amritprava Mahanta and his two personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora.

They are among seven people arrested in connection with the case.

Mahanta is accused of murder, while the two security officers have been charge sheeted with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust related to misappropriation of funds or property entrusted to them.

Garg’s wife, Garima, who was present during the hearing, welcomed the court’s decision. She said the family wanted all the accused to remain in custody until the case is closed and punishment is delivered.

Kamar told reporters that the prosecution opposed bail on the grounds that Mahanta was part of the alleged conspiracy leading to Garg’s death. He added that the two security officers did not disclose details about money deposited with them until they came under investigation. The court accepted these arguments and rejected the bail pleas.

The singer and composer died at the age of 52 while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19, where he had gone to attend the North East India Festival.

A Special Investigation Team of the state police CID is probing the case and submitted its charge sheet on December 12. A separate inquiry is also underway in Singapore.
