Zelensky open to talks with Russia after aligning with US and Europe

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he is open to direct negotiations with Russia but only after reaching a unified stance with the United States and European allies on how to end the ongoing war.

Speaking from Munich, where he is set to meet with US Vice President JD Vance, Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine is willing to engage in discussions but needs clear and coordinated support from Western partners.

"If they provide us with specific answers to our requests and a shared understanding of the dangers posed by Putin, then, with our unified position, we will be ready to talk with the Russians," he said.

Zelensky also addressed the recent diplomatic moves by US President Donald Trump, who held separate phone calls with both him and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. However, Trump has yet to present a concrete plan for ending the conflict.

"I don't see that the US has a plan ready," Zelensky remarked, underscoring Kyiv’s concerns over Trump’s push for a swift resolution and his skepticism about continued military aid to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Vice President Vance reaffirmed Washington’s backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty, stating in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the US has "military leverage" over Russia.

Zelensky welcomed these remarks, calling them "strong signals" and expressing gratitude for the continued US commitment.
