New Delhi: Ukraine President termed Russian attack a "new iron curtain' falling on his country, according to BBC.

Wearing combat fatigue instead of usual suit, he addressed the nation on TV in the thick of the war.

The President appeared loud and strong, just as he made clear the situation his nation has plunged into following the Russian invasion.

Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine's task was "for that curtain not to fall" on its territory.

His calling of Russian invasion a new iron curtain alludes to bygone Soviet times when Europe was divided into communist east and capitalist west.

As he made the remark, his soldiers are trying to turn the tables on the marauding Russian forces across the border. As of now, it appears to be a gargantuan task for his disproportionately weak forces.

More reports of damages being done by Russian forces are yet to come along. However, the bits of information percolating indicate widespread casualties in Ukraine, with Russian forces capturing cities.

And the exact casualty numbers are unclear, but include Ukrainian civilians.

It is in this thick the President said that the attack closes Russia off civilised world.

"What we have heard today are not just missile blasts, fighting and the rumble of aircraft. This is the sound of a new iron curtain, which has come down and is closing Russia off from the civilised world," he said.

Russia's invasion by land, air and sea began after a pre-dawn TV address where President Vladimir Putin demanded that Ukraine's military lay down its arms. It followed weeks of escalating tensions, as Russia massed troops along Ukraine's borders, the report said.
