Greta Thunberg detained during protest in Brussels over fossil fuel subsidies
text_fieldsClimate activist Greta Thunberg was detained in Brussels on Saturday after participating in a protest against fossil fuel subsidies.
Thunberg, alongside dozens of others, blocked a road during a demonstration organized by the United for Climate Justice movement. The protest aimed to pressure the European Union to end subsidies for fossil fuels to meet its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
An AFP journalist reported seeing the 21-year-old Swedish activist, who has previously faced arrests for civil disobedience at similar protests worldwide, being carried away by police after refusing to leave the sit-in.
Thunberg and a smaller group of activists had broken away from the main march, which started outside the European Parliament.
The protesters, along with scientists and economists, had addressed EU leaders in an open letter, urging the immediate phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies to prevent further environmental damage. The letter emphasized that until such action is taken, people will continue to protest and hold leaders accountable for their climate policies.
