Jakarta: Southeast Asian nations have urged the United States and Iran to continue peace negotiations, enforce a ceasefire, and ensure the safe passage of ships, seafarers, and aircraft through the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In an emergency video conference on Monday—its second in recent weeks—the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations reviewed the war’s wider impact, including rising global fuel prices, and discussed possible regional cooperation to manage emerging crises.

The 11-member bloc stressed that all countries are obliged to resolve disputes through peaceful means, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, and protect civilians as well as civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts.

It also called for the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, aimed at preventing further loss of life, ensuring maritime security, and safeguarding freedom of navigation and overflight.
