Google Chrome introduces new Safety Check update with one-tap unsubscribe

Google Chrome's latest update for September 2024 brings a range of new features aimed at enhancing user security and privacy.

The update includes improvements to the browser’s Safety Check feature, which now automatically runs in the background to protect users from online threats, while also making it easier to control website notifications and permissions.

One of the standout additions is the one-tap unsubscribe feature, allowing users to quickly opt out of unwanted website notifications by simply tapping the Unsubscribe button. According to Google, this new tool has led to a 30 percent reduction in notification volume on supported Pixel devices.

In addition to better notification management, the updated Safety Check feature will also revoke permissions from infrequently visited websites and alert users to potential security risks. Leveraging Google Safe Browsing, it automatically protects users from abusive or deceptive notifications. Chrome users can review and undo these actions if needed.

The update further enhances security by notifying desktop users of any extensions that may pose a risk, and includes a “Safety at a glance” dashboard that provides users with an overview of any compromised passwords, along with an option to change them.

For greater privacy, Chrome now allows users to grant certain permissions, such as access to their camera or microphone, on a one-time basis. Once the user leaves the website, the permissions will be automatically revoked.

Android users can access these new features through the Safety Check option in the browser’s settings, while desktop users will find them under Privacy and Security. The features are part of the Google Chrome 128 update, which is now being rolled out to smartphones, desktops, and other devices.
