ChatGPT-like tool being tested by China's Alibaba Group

Shanghai: China's Alibaba Group announced on Wednesday that it is creating an artificial intelligence (AI) tool in the ChatGPT fashion and that it is presently undergoing internal testing.

Since its November release, ChatGPT, a chatbot sensation backed by Microsoft that can produce articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry in response to questions, has been ranked as the fastest-growing consumer app in history.

Alibaba released a statement in response to news that it is creating a ChatGPT-like dialogue robot that is currently available for staff testing, according to the 21st Century Herald newspaper, Reuters reported.

Alibaba declined to comment when contacted about the newspaper article, which also claimed that the company would integrate the technology with its DingTalk chat app.

"Frontier innovations such as large language models and generative AI have been our focused areas since the formation of DAMO in 2017," said an Alibaba spokesperson.

"As a technology leader, we will continue to invest in turning cutting-edge innovations into value-added applications for our customers as well as their end-users through cloud services," the spokesperson added.

Other software companies have hurried to create competing solutions in response to OpenAI's release of ChatGPT to the general public in late November.

Alphabet Inc. revealed on Monday that it would launch a chatbot named Bard and incorporate it into its search engine.

A day later, OpenAI owner Microsoft Corp announced that ChatGPT would be integrated with Bing, one of its search engines.

Chinese search engine giant Baidu revealed on Tuesday that the internal testing of a chatbot it is calling Ernie is now complete.

Due to investor enthusiasm about ChatGPT, a number of other Chinese AI technology companies have seen their stock prices rocket despite though they frequently haven't yet announced any relevant technologies.
