Since its independence in 1776, the US has constantly sought to spread its influence by force. In 1812, President James Madison urged the country to go to war and it invaded Canada; in 1846, the US declared war on Mexico . Then, on May 26, 1848, both sides ratified the peace treaty and the Republic of Texas became a part of America.
