Tokyo Olympics: Only two athletes to represent Brazil in opening ceremony

Tokyo: Brazilian Olympic committee has decided on Friday to have bare minimum contingent members during the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics owing to the "pandemic scenario" as only two athletes -flag bearers Bruno Rezende and Ketleyn Quadros will represent the country.

Besides Rezende, a decorated volleyball player, and Quadros, a judoka, chef de mission Marcos La Porta and another team official will be the only two non-athletes marching representing the 300-plus Brazilian contingent at the Olympic Games

"The decision was taken taking into account the safety of Brazilian athletes in a pandemic scenario, minimising the risk of contamination and close contact, thus ensuring the health of all Team Brazil members," a Brazilian Olympic Committee statement said.

"The Brazilian team respects the importance and symbolism of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

"Bruno and Ketleyn will be legitimate representatives of the entire delegation and will honour the highest Olympic Values by entering the Brazilian Flag at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium."

This is in contrast to 2016 Rio, when, as hosts, a record number of 462 athletes had marched during the opening ceremony.

Bruno Rezende was a part of the country's gold-winning team at the 2016 Rio Olympics after silver medals at previous Games.
