Guadalajara: Colombia secured their place in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Congo at Guadalajara Stadium, moving to two wins from two in Group K.

The deadlock was broken in the second half when Daniel Muñoz produced a deflected strike to beat goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, the defender’s second goal of the tournament. Muñoz now matches his international tournament haul from the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024.

Colombia dominated much of the first half. Mpasi had to be alert to deny Jhon Arias, while Muñoz saw a header saved and a rebound ruled out for offside. James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz and Gustavo Puerta all tested the goalkeeper as Colombia pressed for an opener. Congo threatened late in the period when Arthur Masuaku’s cross narrowly missed Yoane Wissa.

After the break Mpasi again frustrated Colombia, blocking a close-range effort by Díaz before Arias dragged a shot wide. Colombia’s persistence paid when substitute Jhon Córdoba’s hold-up play set up Muñoz for the decisive strike. Diaz had two goals disallowed for offside as Congo mounted late pressure but could not find an equaliser.

The win confirms Colombia as one of the early qualifiers from Group K; they face Portugal in their final group match. Congo remain alive mathematically — they must beat Uzbekistan and rely on other results to have a chance of progression.
