Birmingham: Indian ace shuttler and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu stormed into the women's singles quarterfinals of Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 on Friday. Men's third seed and 2021 World Championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth too reached the men's singles quarterfinals in the tournament, IANS reported.

Women's top seed Sindhu won in straight games against Uganda's Husina Kobugabe at Hall 5 in the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham.

The silver medalist in the 2018 Goldcoast edition scored 21-10, 21-9 against the Ugandan, whose highest ranking was 216 in March 2022. Sindhu will face Malaysia's Jin Wei Goh, which is to be a repetition of their Mixed Team final clash. The Indian had beaten Jin Wei Goh 22-20, 21-17 in the team event.

Srikanth beat his Sri Lankan opponent in straight sets, 21-9, 21-12. The silver medalist from the 2018 Goldcoast CWG defeated Dumindu Abeywickrama 21-9, 21-12.

His next assignment is Toby Penty of England in the quarterfinal.

The young women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah of Mauritius 2-0 (21-2, 21-4) in a totally one-sided match in the Round of 16 stage.
