Rocket lab launches eight satellites for enhanced wildfire detection

The mission, titled “Finding Hot Wildfires Near You,” was launched on March 26 from Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 1 in Mahia, New Zealand, at 11:30 a.m. EST.
The satellites were deployed on behalf of OroraTech, a German company specialising in thermal imaging solutions aimed at detecting and monitoring wildfires. The mission utilised Rocket Lab’s 59-foot Electron rocket, which efficiently released the satellites into their designated orbit within an hour of liftoff.
The newly launched satellites will integrate with OroraTech’s existing constellation of thermal infrared imaging satellites, enhancing around-the-clock monitoring capabilities. Positioned at a 97-degree inclination approximately 550 kilometers above Earth, these satellites will provide real-time data on wildfire activity across the globe.
OroraTech’s long-term goal is to expand its network to over 100 satellites, which would significantly enhance early wildfire detection and improve disaster management efforts worldwide.
During the launch broadcast, OroraTech CEO Martin Langer highlighted the practical applications of the technology, emphasising that foresters and other users can access critical wildfire data directly on their mobile devices. This accessibility aims to improve response times, enabling more efficient wildfire prediction and management.
The mission was prepared within just four months. The timing was strategically planned to ensure the new satellites would be operational before the peak wildfire season.
This launch marks Rocket Lab’s fifth successful mission of the year, with another upcoming launch planned for hypersonic technology testing under the DART AE program.
