Despite Washington's public concerns about an anticipated Israeli military offensive in Rafah, the US reportedly authorized the transfer of billions of dollars worth of bombs and fighter jets to Israel, including over 1,800 MK-84 2,000lb bombs and 500 MK-82 500lb bombs.

The arms package, reported to include over 1,800 MK-84 2,000lb bombs and 500 MK-82 500lb bombs, comes at a time when Israel is facing intense international scrutiny for its ongoing bombing campaign and ground offensive in Gaza.

The decision by the US to provide such extensive military assistance underscores the enduring alliance between the two nations, with Washington annually granting $3.8 billion in military aid to Israel.

This move, however, has drawn criticism from some quarters, particularly within the Democratic Party and Arab American groups, who argue that US support for Israel contributes to a sense of impunity.

Despite this dissent, President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to backing Israel, even as tensions between his administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu become more apparent.

In response to the escalating conflict, the US has expedited the delivery of air defences and munitions to Israel, aiming to bolster its capabilities amid the ongoing violence. However, Biden's acknowledgement of the concerns felt by many Arab Americans over the conflict and US support for Israel indicates a recognition of the complexities involved.

The decision to authorize the arms transfer follows discussions between Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and US counterparts during his recent visit to Washington. Gallant emphasized the importance of US-Israeli ties to his country's security and the necessity of maintaining Israel's "qualitative military edge" in the region.

The conflict itself traces back to October 7th, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, resulting in casualties and hostage-taking, according to Israeli reports. In retaliation, Israel initiated an extensive air and ground assault on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, leading to a significant loss of life, as reported by health authorities in Gaza.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, the dynamics of US-Israel relations remain under scrutiny, with the Biden administration navigating the delicate balance between support for Israel and international calls for de-escalation and dialogue.
