Dubai announces Dh300,000 prize contest for sustainable home gardens

Dubai Municipality has launched the third edition of its community agriculture competition, titled ‘The Most Beautiful Sustainable Home Garden in Dubai’, as part of the UAE’s Year of the Community. The competition offers prizes worth Dh300,000 for ten winning entries that demonstrate sustainability, creativity and visual appeal in home garden design.
The initiative aims to encourage residents to convert their home gardens into eco-friendly spaces that use sustainable landscaping and resource-efficient techniques. It supports the municipality’s wider environmental objectives under the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040, which seeks to expand green areas and make Dubai a model for sustainable urban living.
To assist participants, Dubai Municipality will hold workshops, awareness programmes and offer digital guidance on sustainable garden design. The programme will promote efficient use of water and energy, innovative agricultural technologies and environmentally responsible practices in residential areas.
Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al-Awadi, Director of the Agriculture Department at Dubai Municipality, said, “this competition reflects our commitment to enhancing Dubai’s urban landscape and developing the agriculture sector”.
”We do not just plant trees; we foster awareness and environmental responsibility across every neighbourhood. We encourage residents to adopt sustainable agricultural solutions that expand green spaces”, he added.
Entries will be evaluated by a judging committee based on ten criteria, including water efficiency, biodiversity, soil health, waste management, energy use, contribution to the microclimate, cleanliness, safety, space utilisation and innovation.
The competition is open to Dubai residents with home gardens that integrate sustainability and design aesthetics. Applications, including garden photos, can be submitted until December 21, 2025. Site inspections will take place in January and February 2026 and winners will be announced in March 2026.
Dubai Municipality has also conducted 150 environmental workshops and community events over the past year to promote sustainable practices and increase public engagement in creating greener urban spaces.
