Shahidul Alam returns honorary doctorate in solidarity with Palestinians
text_fieldsRenowned Bangladeshi photojournalist and human rights activist Shahidul Alam has returned his honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London (UAL) in a powerful show of solidarity with Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Alam, who was named one of TIME magazine's 'Persons of the Year' in 2018, has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli military's actions in Gaza following Hamas' attacks on Israeli citizens.
He has utilized his social media platforms to condemn Israel's military response and criticized Western governments for their perceived support of Israel on international television networks.
Alam received the honorary doctorate on July 8, 2022, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to photography and activism. His illustrious career includes exhibiting his works in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Contemporary Arts.
He holds the distinction of being the first Asian to receive the Mother Jones Award for documentary photography and the first non-Caucasian to lead World Press Photo's international jury.
Alam's decision to return his honorary degree comes amid rising student protests against Israel's actions in Gaza at various universities in the Western world. These protests, inspired by demonstrations at Columbia University, call for universities to sever ties with companies supporting Israel's military operations and, in some cases, to cut all connections with Israel. The protests have led to the detention of hundreds of demonstrators across the US and Europe.
Initially encouraged by UAL students' vocal support for Palestine, Alam expressed deep disappointment with the university administration's stance on the issue. Despite the appointment of James Purnell, a known Zionist, as Vice-Chancellor of UAL, students have accused the administration of being disconnected from their concerns.
The students have highlighted how they have been marginalized and ignored, especially in light of UAL's partnerships with companies and institutions associated with Israel.
In his statement, Alam emphasized that he could no longer remain associated with an organization that stifles the voices of those protesting against what he described as genocide in Gaza. By returning his honorary doctorate, he underscored his commitment to human rights and solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
