Khartoum: Saudi Arabia has started its distribution of dates and food in Sudan and South Sudan as part of the King Salman programme for Iftar on Friday, Arab News reported citing Saudi Press Agency.

The event was organized by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance, which was represented by the Saudi embassy's religious attaché in Khartoum.

The event was attended by many VIPs, including Sudan's Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Abdul Ati Ahmed Abbas and Saudian ambassador to Sudan Ali bin Hassan Jaafar. The Kingdom is planning to distribute more than 15,000 food baskets and 10 tons of dates throughout Ramadan.

Abdul Ati Ahmed Abbas lauded Saudi for its programmes of assistance. They have benefited people around the world, he said

The Saudi ministry has sent food baskets to Bangladesh, benefiting more than 129,000 people. In addition to that, India's neighbour received 15 tons of dates for more than 45,000 people.

The Bangladesh event was attended by Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Issa bin Yusuf Al-Dahilan along with the Saudi embassy's religious attaché in Bangladesh, Ali-Al-Zgheibi. He said that each basket contained 20 kilograms of different food items.

Further, Saudi has distributed 800 Ramadan food baskets and 11 tons of dates in Ethiopia, benefitting 8,000 people. The Ethiopian administration has thanked Saudi for its support.

Saudi Arabia has initiated projects in 34 countries this year, aiming to provide iftar meals for nearly 1.2 million people throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
