The 2024 STEAM Festival at King Salman Science Oasis in Riyadh celebrates the legacy of renowned Muslim scientist Jabir ibn Hayyan, widely regarded as the "father of chemistry" for his groundbreaking contributions. Running until September 30 under the theme “Fun Chemistry,” the festival offers educational and entertaining experiences, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Born in 721, Ibn Hayyan made significant advancements in chemistry, including discovering key compounds like hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, gold water and silver nitrate. His innovation in distillation and other processes greatly influenced both the Islamic world and Western science. His works, translated into Latin, spread knowledge throughout Europe.

The festival features over 100 workshops, panel discussions, live shows, and interactive exhibits spanning STEAM fields. It highlights the history of chemistry and modern petrochemical innovations, environmental challenges and sustainable solutions aligned with Vision 2030. With over 25 pavilions, the event shows Saudi Arabia’s vision towards scientific progress and its rich scientific heritage.

Jabir ibn Hayyan's impact continues to be celebrated, with scholars like Ibn Khaldun calling him "the imam of chemistry writers," as the Kingdom promotes pride in its scientific roots while looking toward the future.
