Dictionary.com adds over 300 new words, "trauma dumping" and "nearlywed" introduced
text_fieldsOakland: Popular source of meanings and definitions Dictionary.com has added 313 new terms to its list along with updating definitions for existing words. Some of the new terms are trauma dumping, nearlywed, self-coup, hellscape, deadass, petfluencer, rage farming, queerbaiting, cyberflash, cakeism, and microdosing.
Words that describe contemporary identity politics and workplace cultures - digital nomad and pinkwashing - are also in the updated version. Over 1,200 words got revised definitions. The online dictionary now also has common abbreviations and accepted terms for defining various identities like WOC, Latine, anti-fat.
John Kelly, Senior Director of Editorial at Dictionary.com, told USA Today that the sheer range and volume of vocabulary captured in our latest update to Dictionary.com reflects a shared feeling that change today is happening faster and more than ever before. "Our team of lexicographers is documenting and contextualizing that unstoppable swirl of the English language - not only to help us better understand our changing times but how the times we live in change, in turn, our language."
The website said that its lexicographers observe and document language change wherever it is happening. They also define terms that help people understand our times. "The most recent additions to Dictionary.com come from just about everywhere, spanning the multiverse-like complexity of modern life."
