Wayanad: Congress MLA I.C. Balakrishnan and three others have been booked on charges of abetting the suicide of N M Vijayan, the party’s Wayanad district office-bearer, police confirmed on Thursday.

A senior police officer in the district stated that the charge of suicide abetment, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), has been incorporated into the FIR in connection with the deaths of Vijayan and his son, Jijesh.

The officer also confirmed that Balakrishnan, along with Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) president N D Appachan and two other individuals named in Vijayan's suicide note, have been listed as accused in the case. "The action was taken based on the contents of the suicide note," the officer said.

Seventy-eight-year-old Vijayan, who served as the Wayanad DCC treasurer, and his 38-year-old son, Jijesh, were admitted to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital after attempting suicide. Both succumbed to their injuries on December 27, 2024.

The tragic incident has sparked a political storm, with the ruling CPI(M) alleging that the deaths were linked to a cooperative bank job scam involving Balakrishnan. Reports suggest that Vijayan, in his role as a party office-bearer, may have accepted money from individuals seeking jobs at a Congress-controlled cooperative bank, allegedly under Balakrishnan’s direction. The allegations point to this financial misconduct as a potential trigger for the father-son duo’s drastic actions.
