IB officer surrenders after Kerala HC rejects bail in colleague’s suicide case
text_fieldsKochi: An hour after the Kerala High Court on Monday rejected his anticipatory bail plea, Intelligence Bureau officer Sukanth Suresh, accused of involvement in the suicide of his 24-year-old girlfriend and colleague, surrendered to the local police in Kochi.
Suresh had been evading arrest since March 24, when the woman official tragically ended her life by jumping in front of a speeding train at Thiruvananthapuram after completing her night duty at the International Airport. The court, dismissing his anticipatory bail plea, cited evidence indicating that Suresh had exploited the deceased emotionally, physically, and financially.
Following the court’s decision, Suresh voluntarily appeared before the police. Since the case is registered with the Thiruvananthapuram Police, he will be handed over to the investigating team after standard procedures are completed.
During the hearing on May 22, the court noted that although the bail application was filed on April 3, nearly two months had passed without Suresh being traced by the police. The court questioned whether this delay suggested a lack of urgency in his arrest, especially given his position as an IB officer.
“How long can a person remain absconding in these modern times? And if he works for the Intelligence Bureau, does that protect him from arrest?” the court observed.
Last week, the deceased woman’s family met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, expressing concerns over the delay in Suresh’s arrest. The father alleged that Suresh’s close ties with the ruling party might be influencing the police response.
Following the woman’s death, her parents revealed that she was in a close relationship with Suresh, who was posted at Cochin International Airport. It was discovered that she used to transfer her salary to him.
The police investigation also uncovered that she was speaking to Suresh seconds before jumping in front of the train. Additionally, medical records surfaced revealing that the young woman had undergone an abortion last year, information that her father provided to the investigating authorities.
