Wayanad: Allegations have arisen about the killing of the Maoist Velmurugan in Padinjarathara in Wayanad district that it is an attempt in fabrication by the state. Political party leaders, human rights activists and locals unanimously said that the encounter was fake and that the police action was unilateral.

The silence of authorities makes the allegations more credible. The fact that journalists and human rights activists were not allowed to see the body raised further suspicions.

Kerala Chapter of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) demanded an independent magisterial inquiry into the death of Maoist Velmurugan during the police firing. State President P Chandrasekhar demanded a thorough investigation on the backdrop of the Supreme Court direction that the head of the magistrate who registered the FIR should inquire into all the encounter deaths.

In a statement, the state committees of student and youth organisations of Communist Party of India(CPI), All India Student Federation (AISF) and All India youth Federation(AIYF) respectively, have demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged encounter, which has raised many suspicions.

The killing of Velmurugan in a fake encounter was an insult to the Left government, said (AISF) state secretariat. Meanwhile AIYF State President Advocate R Sajilal and Secretary Mahesh Kakkam demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran had lashed out at the state government over the killing of a Maoist in a police firing. He demanded that thunderbolt must withdraw from the ongoing Maoist hunt. Interestingly CPI is a partner of the ruling left government

He later denied that the CPI had a difference of opinion with the government. "Some people want to make it appear that there are problems in the CPI", added Rajendran.

Bullet hit trees at Wayand, Kerala after Police encounter with maoists

As the presence of the Maoists in the tribal areas in Wayanad continues, basic issues are not being discussed. The government is ignoring the tribal land issue. Days earlier, Congress state chief, Mullappally Ramachandran had said that issues like lack of financial security in tribal villages should be primarily addressed.

Colonies often have a history of development following Maoist influence. The deplorable state of the court following the 2014 clashes between the Chappa colonies in Thondarnad panchayath was a topic of discussion. The then Tribal Welfare Minister PK Jayalakshmi visited and addressed the problems of the adivasis and allotted 5 crore for comprehensive development including road construction.
