Panna/Madhya Pradesh: In an apparent move in congruence with the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill, a nearly 30-year-old madrasa in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district was demolished on Saturday. Thus, it became the first Muslim-owned structure to come under scrutiny of the Waqf Act, Siasat reported.
The Times of India (TOI) reported that the authorities alleged that the madrasa was built illegally, though the owner said that it was built after procuring permission from the local gram panchayat.
According to TOI, authorities had issued a final notice to the owner of the structure, but legal proceedings prolonged the scene. However, when the Act came into existence, the area became under the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction and turned the structure illegal.

It was on April 8 that the Waqf Amendment Act came into force after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on April 5. This happened after intense debate in both Houses of Parliament.
Following the passage of the law, several Muslim organisations and individuals, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and opposition MPs, moved the Supreme Court against the law.
According to the ruling BJP, the new law is a force for transparency and empowerment of backward Muslims and women from the community when the Opposition slams it for its infringement on the rights of Muslims.
Violent clashes broke out in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Saturday, claiming three lives and 200 got arrested after widespread protests took the stage there against the Waqf Amendment Act. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee promised that the Act will not be implemented in the state.
