Badaun: An Uttar Pradesh court sentenced a man to jail for allegedly cutting open his pregnant wife's stomach to check her baby's gender. The woman was eight months pregnant then, and following the horrible attack, the baby did not survive, NDTV reported.

The court sentenced Panna Lal, a resident of Badaun's Civil Lines, who allegedly attacked his wife Anita in September 2020.

The couple, who had been married for 22 years, had five daughters, but Panna La used to fight with Anita, demanding a boy child. Anita's family, who were well aware of the regular fights between them, tried to convince Panna Lal to stop fighting with her, but he threatened to divorce her and marry another woman so that he could get a boy child.

The couple fought on the day of the incident also over the gender of the eight-month-old unborn. A furious Panna Lal threatened to open Anita's stomach to check the child's gender, and when she fought back, he threatened to kill her.

He used a sickle to attack her and ran after her when she tried to flee. He grabbed her and allegedly cut her stomach open, Anita told the court, adding that her intestines came out hanging from her stomach.

According to the case, she ran to her brother, who worked in a shop nearby. Seeing her brother, Panna Lal fled the scene, the case states. After being rushed to the hospital, Anita was saved. She lost her child.

However, Panna Lal argued in court that Anita inflicted the wounds on herself to fabricate a case against him since he was involved in a property dispute with her brothers.
