Telangana heatwave death toll surges as 51 die in single day

Hyderabad: Telangana recorded 51 heatstroke deaths on Saturday, May 23, taking the state’s reported toll over three days to more than 100 after 22 deaths on Thursday and 34 on Friday. Temperatures remained above 46°C in several districts.
According to local reports, the highest number of deaths on Saturday was in the erstwhile Warangal district, which recorded 23 fatalities. The undivided Karimnagar region reported 11 deaths, Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem together reported seven, and Adilabad and Nalgonda recorded five each. Additional fatalities were reported from Hanamkonda, Bhupalpally, Nirmal, Mancherial, Suryapet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri and other districts.
The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for multiple north and east Telangana districts and warned that severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the coming week, with daytime temperatures expected between 43°C and 46°C in the worst affected areas. Hyderabad is forecast to be comparatively milder, with maximums around 41°C–42°C and scattered thunderstorms possible after May 24 and 25 that may provide temporary relief.
Authorities urged residents to avoid direct sun exposure during afternoon hours, stay hydrated and seek immediate medical attention for symptoms of heatstroke.
