Chennai: Popular Tamil actor Vijay is all set to try his hand at politics, launching his own party in the state, NDTV reported.

As part of the process of registering the party with the Election Commission of India, Vijay has been elected as the president, the report said citing sources.

At the general council meeting held ahead of registration around 200 members attended alongside appointing the party's General Secretary and Treasurer.

It is reported that a Central Executive Committee has been constituted as well.

The general council authorised the actor to choose the party’s name, urging him to plunge into politics.

Vijay is likely to get into politics ahead of the 2026 state polls, the report said citing source, adding that the party ‘will definitely have Kazhagam in it, keeping in line with traditions in Tamil Nadu’.

Vijay, who has acted in 68 movies, is a hugely popular star with a fan base and his fan clubs carry out charities including distribution of food, educational scholarships, libraries, evening tuition and legal help, according to the report.

During a programme to honour student toppers, he advised students to read about Ambedkar, Periyar, Kamaraj, taking in ‘what’s good and leave the rest’.
