Swiggy customer demands 'no Muslim delivery person', Netizens call out bigotry

A customer ordering food via Swiggy demanded that the restaurant not send a Muslim delivery person. After the screenshot of the instruction was shared on Twitter, many slammed the user for their bigotry.
Shaik Salauddin, head of an organisation of workers employed in the gig economy, shared the screenshot and asked Swiggy to take a stand against it. He wrote: "Dear Swiggy, please take a stand against such a bigoted request. We (delivery workers) are here to deliver food to one and all, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, or Sikh.
Congress MP from Karnataka Karti Chidambaram reacted to the incident and tweeted: "Platform companies cannot sit back and watch as gig workers face such blatant bigotry in the name of religion. What action will such companies take to safeguard the rights of gig workers?"
Swiggy is yet to respond to the incident.
Customers demanding that their food be delivered by a non-Muslim person is not unheard of in India. Several such incidents have been reported in the past.
When a Zomato customer in 2019 cancelled their order because it was delivered by a person from another religion, the company tweeted: "Food doesn't have a religion. It is a religion." The founder also made it clear that Zomato is not sorry to lose any business because of its values.
