Sri Lanka releases 14 Indian fishermen during PM Modi's visit
text_fieldsColombo: In a significant diplomatic gesture reflecting the strengthening ties between India and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan government released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the island nation.
The development followed detailed deliberations between Prime Minister Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday, where the long-pending issue of fishermen’s arrests was raised. The Prime Minister emphasized a humane approach to resolving the matter and urged the immediate release of the detained fishermen and the return of their boats.
“The issue of fishermen was discussed in depth. We agreed to approach it with compassion and urgency. We highlighted the need for the swift release of the fishermen and their vessels,” Prime Minister Modi stated during a joint press briefing with President Dissanayake.
The arrest of Indian fishermen, mainly from Tamil Nadu, by Sri Lankan authorities on allegations of trespassing into Sri Lankan territorial waters has long remained a sensitive and recurring matter between the two neighbours. Since the start of 2025, 119 Indian fishermen and 16 fishing boats have reportedly been apprehended, triggering repeated appeals from Indian coastal communities and diplomatic efforts for their release.
Following the leaders’ meeting, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing a press conference, confirmed the positive outcome. “We have been informed that Sri Lankan authorities have decided to release 11 fishermen immediately, and potentially a few more in the coming days,” Misri said.
He added, “This issue was discussed thoroughly, and as the Prime Minister himself noted, both sides recognised the importance of adopting a humanitarian and constructive stance, considering the livelihood concerns of fishermen on both sides.”
The release of the fishermen comes amid a series of high-level diplomatic and developmental engagements during PM Modi’s visit. Among the key highlights was the joint inauguration of major infrastructure projects supported by India, including the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway line and a newly constructed signalling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura railway segment.
In a landmark moment, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan — one of Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honours — in recognition of India’s unwavering support and his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.
Earlier on Saturday, the two leaders witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering infrastructure, energy, and development cooperation, further enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
To honour the visiting dignitary, President Dissanayake hosted a State Banquet at the President’s House on Saturday evening. Extending a heartfelt welcome, the Sri Lankan President expressed confidence that the visit would deepen the friendship between the people of both countries and open new avenues for cooperation.
“We are known for our hospitality, and it is always a joy to welcome our friends from across the Palk Strait,” President Dissanayake said. “We hope Indian citizens continue to visit our beautiful island, where they will be met with warmth and affection. We eagerly await your return and convey our sincere wishes for the good health of Prime Minister Modi and for the progress and prosperity of Indian citizens. May our enduring friendship and cooperation continue to grow.”
