‘Small group’ controls content, Centre calls out Wikipedia over 'bias': report
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday questioned Wikipedia following multiple complaints about bias and inaccuracies on the internet encyclopaedia, India Today reported.
It is reported citing sources that the government put the platform on notice citing that its small group of editors exercise significant control over the content, potentially undermining its neutrality.
The government asked the free online encyclopedia why the platform should not be classified as a publisher not an intermediary.
Volunteers create and edit pages at Wikipedia on a variety of topics in various fields of knowledge.
The Centre’s response comes two months after the Delhi High Court warned the platform of a potential ban in India.
The court was considering the case filed by news agency Asian News International (ANI) alleging inaccuracies and defamatory content on Wikipedia page.
During the hearing on November 1, the court questioned the platform’s claims of being ‘free encyclopedia’ alongside stressing that it should provide required information when requested.
Wikipedia faced criticism over alleged bias and inaccuracies in the ongoing US presidential polls.
Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk, accusing the platform of supporting far-left ideologies, urged people to stop donating to it.
