New Delhi: A report published by the US-based NGOs The Azadi Project’ and ‘Refugees International’ inferred that Rohingyan detainees in India are facing severe human rights violations, constitutional violations, and a "failure by India to adhere to its commitments to international human rights treaties.”

There are 22,500 Rohingya Muslims registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in India. Of these, 676 are in detention, and around 50 per cent of them are women and children, and 608 of them have no ongoing court cases. There are pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and the elderly, too.

They have very limited access to legal aid and limited chances to contact international organizations like UNHCR. Many of them have been in detention for more than a decade without being charged with any criminal offence.

Children in these prisons are denied access to schools. There are even some children who have been imprisoned since childhood and have never seen the outside world. The elderly, who can barely walk, have to wait for food and other necessities from their fellow prisoners. Males and females are separated, and adult children are separated from their parents. This is a serious violation of the law. The report calls for the Rohingya to be given dignified asylum and the elderly to be released.

The report was based on a study involving conversations with refugee detainees in India, their families, lawyers, and a visit to a detention centre, The Hindu reported. As per the study report, most of the refugees remain detained even after they have served their sentences.
