Protesting in Well of the House is wrong and must be stopped: Om Birla

Speaking to the media after the end of the winter session of the Parliament, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Wednesday remarked that protesting in Well of the House cannot be part of a tradition. Even if there was any tradition, it is wrong and must be stopped, Birla said, expressing anger at Members of the Parliament who storm into the Well of the House and protest.

The Speaker further added that he tried to run the House smoothly and that he converses with all political parties from time to time so that the House can become the centre of discussion.

"At times, we reach a conclusion, and at times we do not," he added.

He added that he would continue to try to run the House without disruptions and hoped that his efforts would yield positive results.

Regarding the winter session, Birla said that 18 meetings were held, and work was done for 83 hours and 12 minutes. However, 18 hours and 48 minutes were wasted due to the opposition's ruckus, he added. The productivity of the Lok Sabha stands at 82 per cent, he calculated.

Discussion on every subject and Bill must be held, Birla said. He also urged all lawmakers and parties to attend the House, noting the low attendance of MPs in Parliament this session.

Regarding the absence of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Misra Teni, Birla said he cannot say anything as no business was listed in Teni's name. Regarding the opposition's demand for a discussion on Lakhimpur Kheri violence, the Speaker said the subject of discussion is decided by process and rules.
