New Delhi: A professor at Shri Varshney College in Aligarh has been forced to take leave from teaching after a video of him offering namaz in an open space on the campus went viral.

In the video, Professor SK Khalid can be seen praying in a garden inside campus, prompting the right wing members to take the matter to the college authorities, which also set up a panel to probe the 'incident'.

The Principal of the college, AK Gupta, was quoted by The Indian Express that "when enquired, the teacher admitted that he had offered namaz out of rush. A probe is taking place and further action will be taken against the professor as per the probe committee's recommendation."

The panel is reported to be submitting its report this weekend.

Right-wing groups in the region claimed that campuses should not be used to further religious beliefs. No first information report (FIR) has been filed in connection with the matter.
