Dubai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Dubai for the UN climate change conference. He has highlighted the need for climate financing and technology.

"Arrived in Dubai for the COP-28 Summit. Eagerly anticipating the proceedings that aim to build a better planet," expressed PM Modi on X. "Heartened by the warm reception from the Indian community in Dubai. Their support and enthusiasm exemplify our vibrant culture and strong connections."

He also emphasized the technology transfer to developing nations. These measures would enable these nations to effectively tackle the challenges presented by climate change, reported AFP.

PM Modi is scheduled to participate in the World Climate Action Summit today, a significant segment of the United Nations' Conference of the Parties (COP28) on climate change. Apart from this, PM Modi's agenda includes involvement in three additional events during COP28, scheduled from November 30 to December 12, under the presidency of the UAE.

Highlighting the importance of COP28, PM Modi underlined its role as a platform to review the progress made under the Paris Agreement and devise strategies for future climate action.

Expected to be the largest climate conference in history, COP28 will witness the participation of over 140 heads of state and government, double the attendance of the previous COP27. This event will feature speeches by high-level leaders, with Britain's King Charles III formally inaugurating the proceedings with an official address.

During the commencement of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), nearly 200 nations collectively agreed to establish a fund aimed at aiding countries struggling with the consequences of global warming.

The UAE aims to lead discussions to triple renewable energy capacity and double the rate of energy efficiency improvements annually by 2030. However, experts have cautioned that establishing trust among nations could pose a significant challenge during the critical negotiations scheduled from November 30 to December 12.

While Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas was originally slated to attend COP28, his office confirmed that the Palestinian foreign minister would represent instead. A minute's silence was observed at the conference to mourn the civilians dead in Gaza.

Notably, the leaders of the world's two largest polluters, the United States and China, are absent from COP28. Nevertheless, both nations issued a rare joint climate declaration ahead of the conference, demonstrating unity on climate issues.
