Met dept predicts heatwave conditions for India's east, northwest
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday that there will be heatwave conditions in parts of east India over the next four days, while in the northwest, it is for the next two days, PTI reported.
The heat wave conditions will continue for four days in Gangetic West Benga and Bihar. In Sikkim, Odisha and Jharkhand, the heat wave condition will continue for two-three days.
The IMD said that similar conditions are expected in isolated pockets over Punjab and Haryana on April 17 and in Uttar Pradesh on April 18. On both days, easter Uttar Pradesh is also expected to experience similar conditions, the Met office informed.
For the last six days, heat wave conditions have been going on in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal. In coastal Andhra Pradesh, the same conditions are prevailing for the last four days and in Bihar for three days.
A western disturbance is active in the western Himalayan region, and it might provide some relief from surging temperatures in the plains of northwest India from Tuesday.
The Met continued that Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan might receive isolated to scattered rainfall from April 18-20. However, heavy rainfalls are expected in isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh on April 18. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, heavy rainfall is expected on April 18-19.
Isolated hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab over the next two-three days.
The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, at least 37 degrees Celsius in coastal areas, and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 degrees.
Earlier this month, the Met Office predicted above-normal maximum temperatures for most parts of the country from April to June, except parts of the northwest and the peninsular regions.
Met forecast that most parts of central, east and northwest will experience above-normal heat wave days during the said period.
