Jamia agrees to restore students’ union after 14 days of protests
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to restore its students’ union and withdraw disciplinary action against protesting students following two weeks of demonstrations demanding the revival of the elected body.
In an order issued on Monday, the university said elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) would be conducted within 15 days of the approval of its constitution. A committee will be formed to draft the constitution, paving the way for the union’s return after being dissolved in 2006.
The administration also revoked suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the agitation. Additionally, a committee will be constituted to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the protests.
However, the university said the protesting students had agreed to issue a public apology through a press conference for defamatory statements, actions or social media posts directed at the administration. The posts must also be removed immediately, with compliance to be monitored, according to the order.
The university directed that the agitation be called off immediately following the issuance of the order.
The protests began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the union and the removal of the chief proctor over what they described as a crackdown on demonstrators. Several students had also undertaken hunger strikes as part of the agitation.
