Interfaith relationship sparks violent confrontation at Dehradun railway station
text_fieldsViolent clashes erupted at Dehradun railway station on Thursday night between members of two communities, resulting in stone pelting and vandalism of trains, with the conflict reportedly stemming from an interfaith relationship between a young couple from Badaun, The Indian Express reported.
Tensions escalated when individuals from both communities gathered at the railway station upon learning of the couple’s presence. The confrontation quickly intensified, resulting in objects being thrown and damage caused to trains parked at the station.
Police responded after being informed, deploying a heavy security presence in and around the railway station to control the situation. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh arrived on the scene to oversee the response efforts, with law enforcement conducting foot patrols across the railway station and neighbouring areas, including Rita Mandi, in a bid to restore peace.
Authorities linked the unrest to a missing person’s case from Badaun, where a report had been filed regarding the young woman involved. Despite efforts to defuse the situation, tensions escalated, with both Hindu and Muslim groups engaging in confrontations.
In response, police assured that cases would be registered against those involved in the violence, and a thorough investigation is underway. CCTV footage from the railway station is being reviewed to identify those responsible for the unrest.
By the end of the night, the situation was brought under control, though a heavy police presence remained to prevent further incidents. Authorities have committed to taking legal action against the individuals identified through the investigation.
