Inter-caste marriages check communal tensions: Supreme Court

New Delhi: Intercaste and inter-religious marriages could put a check in communal tensions, Supreme Court observed. The court said that it does not see anything unusual when the new generation chooses to marry irrespective of caste or religion, as they are well educated and progressive. It added that it is ready to help them.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul led bench said that our well-educated youngsters choose to marry irrespective of caste or religion; it reduces the chances of communal conflicts.

The court was giving its verdict on a case regarding a lecturer from Bangaluru. The lecturer, also an MBA graduate, married a man who is also a graduate and lecturer after they fell in love disregarding their castes.

As a response to the girl's parents' complaint, the police asked the girl to go back to them, leaving her husband. But the girl went to court.

The court strongly criticized the police and directed to give them effective training to deal with such cases in eight weeks. Justice Hrishikesh Roy of the bench mentioning the Hadiya Case said that those youngsters who choose to marry beyond caste or religion would have special regard from the court.
