India launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to aid earthquake-stricken Myanmar
text_fieldsIn a swift response to the devastating earthquake that recently struck Myanmar, India has launched a comprehensive relief mission dubbed ‘Operation Brahma.’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's solidarity with the people of Myanmar during a conversation with the country’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, pledging unwavering support during this crisis.
India’s emergency operation began on Saturday, with the Indian Air Force’s C130J military aircraft delivering 15 tonnes of relief materials to Yangon. This initial shipment included essential supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and medicines.
The relief efforts are being intensified with two additional aircraft loaded with humanitarian aid scheduled to depart from Air Force Station Hindon. Furthermore, 60 para-field ambulances are being dispatched to assist with medical needs in the affected areas.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed that Indian naval ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are en route to Yangon, carrying a total of 40 tonnes of aid. In addition, an 80-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed to Nay Pyi Taw to support rescue and relief operations. Led by Commandant P.K. Tiwary of the 8th NDRF battalion based in Ghaziabad, the team is also accompanied by rescue dogs for urban search and rescue missions, following International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) guidelines.
India has previously deployed the NDRF abroad during major disasters, including the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the 2023 Turkiye earthquake. Officials emphasised India’s commitment to serving as a “First Responder” to assist Myanmar in this critical time.
The recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake has caused widespread destruction across Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, claiming over 1,000 lives and injuring more than 2,300 people. Buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure have suffered severe damage, with recovery efforts still underway.
Prime Minister Modi, expressing his concern over the tragedy, reiterated India’s readiness to provide comprehensive assistance to both Myanmar and Thailand. He also instructed Indian authorities to remain on standby and maintain coordination with the affected governments.
The Indian embassy in Myanmar is actively collaborating with local authorities to ensure the swift distribution of relief materials. Meanwhile, Indian nationals in Myanmar are being urged to reach out to the embassy’s emergency contact number for assistance.
