Editors Guild demands probe into freelance journalist's suspected murder

The Editors Guild of India has voiced serious concerns over reports of the suspected murder of Mukesh Chandrakar, a freelance journalist from Chhattisgarh.

Chandrakar, 33, worked as a contributor to several television channels and had recently reported on an alleged road construction scam that led to local authorities investigating certain contractors.

The Guild described the journalist's death as a matter of grave concern, citing suspicions of foul play. It urged the Government of Chhattisgarh to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The Guild emphasized the critical need to safeguard journalists, especially those in smaller towns and rural areas, stressing the importance of their safety while performing their duties.

Highlighting the role of a free press in a democracy, the Guild stated that the ability to operate without fear is essential for the media to fulfill its role effectively. It expressed hope that Chandrakar’s tragic and unnatural death would serve as a wake-up call for authorities to implement stronger measures for journalist protection.

The Editors Guild also called for Chandrakar’s death to prompt meaningful action, ensuring that such incidents are not repeated and that press freedom is upheld across the country.
