A petition filed in the Delhi High Court by 61-year old Kismatun has prompted the HC to issue notice for a court-monitored SIT probe into the death of her son Faizan, allegedly by police violence depicted in a viral video.

The video went viral in February during the Delhi riots and shows five young men being beaten and prodded by police and forced to sing the national anthem. The petition alleges that: "without getting Faizan further medical treatment as advised, the police took Faizan from the hospital in

a grievously injured and critical condition to Jyoti Nagar Police Station and illegally detained him, thereby denying him timely, critical medical care which led to his death."

The petition further alleges that the investigation into the torture and death of Faizan was "lackadaisical" and "compromised" and requested the court to deliver speedy justice for the deceased.

The death of Faizan sparked controversy with many alleging that the actions of the police constituted a hate crime against minorities and that the five men were targeted for being members of the Muslim community. The petition has also asked that an Action Taken Report be filed by the Delhi Police in light of "partisan and biased" actions on display in the video.
