Assam: 11 dead in storm, lightning

Guwahati: Assam has been pounded by thunderstorms and rains since Thursday, with at least 11 people killed in lightning and severe storms, officials said. Thunderstorms and rains have lashed several parts of Assam.

The massive storm wrecked havoc on Dibrugarh's Kherni village on Friday evening, killing four people. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Dibrugarh district project officer, Deepjyoti Hatikakoti said, "At least four people were killed in a thunderstorm in Tingkong revenue village in Dibrugarh district on Friday evening after a strong storm lashed out and uprooted trees in the area."

There were three more deaths in a storm in Barpeta district on Thursday, and a 15-year-old boy died from lightning in Goalpara.
Three others were killed in Tinsukia after a heavy storm on Friday evening.
According to Dipu Kumar Deka, Tinsukia's additional deputy commissioner, three people were killed in the Margherita revenue circle yesterday evening."

"Many houses and property were damaged during the storm. People are taking refuge in schools and government offices," he added.

Over the past few days, the storm uprooted dozens of trees and damaged many homes in various places, according to the ASDMA bulletin.
It further stated that at least 7,378 houses and other establishments have been damaged in the state during the last two days.
