Mumbai : Actress-filmmaker and parliamentarian Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film 'Emergency' is set to hit theaters on January 17. The actress reveals that the story goes beyond the portrayal of a controversial leader, exploring themes that remain deeply relevant today.

The recently released trailer intensifies the political drama, offering a glimpse into the tumultuous period of 1975, particularly focusing on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's infamous declaration, “Indira is India.” Ranaut, who wrote, directed, and stars in the film, shared her excitement about the film's release, describing it as a journey filled with challenges. She emphasized that the story is not just about a controversial political figure but delves into themes that resonate with contemporary issues, making it a significant cinematic experience.

The film brings to life key historical figures such as Jayaprakash Narayan, who led fiery protests, young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Pupul Jayakar, and Jagjivan Ram, capturing the essence of their roles during the Emergency period.

Kangana noted that the film’s release, just a week before Republic Day, makes it an ideal time for audiences to reflect on the resilience of India’s Constitution and experience the film with their loved ones.

Producer Umesh KR Bansal highlighted that the film marks the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency and is not merely a historical retelling. He called it a reflection on the strength of democracy and a tribute to those who fought to protect it. He further described 'Emergency' as a "cinematic milestone" that challenges viewers to question, engage, and remember the true cost of freedom.

'Emergency' features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in his final performance. The film is produced by Zee Studios, Manikarnika Films, and Renu Pitti, with music composed by Sanchit Balhara and G.V. Prakash Kumar. The film is slated for release on January 17, 2025.
