‘Your leaders On Epstein Island?’ Tehran mocks US

As the conflict between Iran and Israel entered its 14th day, tensions escalated further with a sharp exchange of accusations between senior leaders, reflecting the deepening political and military confrontation surrounding the war.

The latest war of words erupted after remarks by Pete Hegseth, the United States Defense Secretary, who publicly mocked the Iranian leadership during a press briefing at the Pentagon. Hegseth claimed that Iranian leaders were hiding in bunkers out of fear of precision air strikes by the US-Israeli coalition and compared their behaviour to that of rats. He also alleged that Iran’s newly installed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had been mortally wounded during an attack on February 28, suggesting that the absence of direct messages from him indicated serious injury.

Iran swiftly rejected the claims. Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, responded with a sharp counterattack, accusing Western leaders of hypocrisy and referencing controversies linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

“Mr. Hegseth! Our leaders have been, and still are, among the people. But your leaders? On Epstein’s island!" he mocked.

Iranian authorities also sought to counter suggestions that the country’s leadership had gone into hiding. Massoud Pesachkian, Iran’s president, publicly appeared at a rally in Tehran during Al-Quds Day, where state media showed him standing among large crowds. The appearance was presented as evidence that Iran’s leadership remained active and visible despite ongoing air strikes.

Hegseth further stated that the US-Israeli coalition had significantly damaged Iran’s missile and drone capabilities during an operation named Operation Epic Fury. At the same time, Washington accused Iranian authorities of tightening domestic controls by restricting internet access and detaining individuals found with Starlink satellite internet devices.

The escalating rhetoric between officials signals a sharp deterioration in diplomatic relations as fighting continues. The political confrontation has unfolded alongside heightened military tensions, including continued attacks on vessels and blockades in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about wider regional instability.
