Washington: The Trump administration has issued a notice imposing an additional 25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, NDTV reported.
The Department of Homeland Security put out the notice for the punitive duties that will go into effect at 12:01 am (EST) on August 27.
The additional tariff is imposed according to the Department of Homeland Security in response to ‘threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation’.
The notice said that ‘The duties set out in the Annex to this document are effective with respect to products of India that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time on August 27, 2025.’
After US President Donald Trump clamped a whopping 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duty on Indian products, the bilateral relations between both countries has taken a downturn.
Trump administration claimed that the tariff was imposed on India for purchasing Russian crude oil thus helping Russia continue its war in Ukraine.
Responding to the tariffs, PM Modi on Monday said that India would withstand the economic pressure by strengthening its resilience.
Addressing a rally in Ahmedabad, PM Modi said that ‘No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it’, adding that the government will come to support of small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers.
Taking on the US pressure, PM Modi questioned what he said politics of economic self-interest happening in the world today where everyone looks out for themselves.
