Toddler survives Thailand nursery massacre, Stays asleep under blanket

Thailand: Paveenut Supolwong aka Ammy is a fortunate three-year-old child who survived last week's massacre at a nursery in northeast Thailand. She was asleep under a blanket in the corner of the classroom when the killer entered. And she stayed up asleep throughout the horrifying incident.

Her parents said Ammy is normally a light sleeper but did not wake amid the murder spree. "I believe there must be some spirits covering her eyes and ears. We have different beliefs, but to me, I think it protected my kid," said her mother. She was the only child to escape the attack unscathed, reported Reuters.

The town of Uthai Sawan witnessed the horrifying event when former police officer Panya Khamrap killed 30 people in the nursery. 22 of them are children. Two children are in hospital with serious head wounds.

Ammy's parents said that she has no memory of the tragic event. It is likely she did not see the bodies of her classmates. After the attacker was subdued, someone found her stirring in the corner of the room. They carried her out and covered her head with the blanket so that she would not witness the bloodbath.

Panompai Sithong, the toddler's mother, said she feels a mix of sadness and gratitude because her child survived but feels sad for other families. The family has been receiving relatives and neighbours who come to wish well for the child. On Sunday, they held a religious Buddhist ceremony for children who endure bad experiences.
