New Delhi: A farmer in northern Thailand had no choice but cull more than 100 crocodiles from his farm during heavy rains in the region, according to NDTV.
Natthapak Khumkad feared that the animals could sneak out in heavy floods, posing a threat to people
Khumkad, who owned a crocodile farm in Lamphun, reportedly said the enclosures to hold the Siamese crocodiles were damaged in the rains.
Worried about the possibility of the animals escaping, Khumkad decided to kill 125 crocodiles, each measuring up to three meters long.
He knew better than allowing crocodiles to roam the flooded countryside, posing a threat to local residents and livestock.
It is reported that the incident took place in the Lamphun province after heavy monsoon rains battered the region.
Heavy rains were reported in northern Thailand in September leading to landslides and floods, killing over 20 people.
The farmer told CNN that he had to make the ‘most difficult decision of his life’ to kill all the animals.
He discussed with his family the situation where ‘if the wall collapsed the damage to people's lives would be far bigger than we can control’.
Natthapak Khumkad took to Facebook showing the eroded walls of the crocodile pond, saying that ‘This was the primary reason that forced me to make an urgent decision’.
Nevertheless his staff tried to fix the pond by blocking off the area, heavy rains made the situation difficult.
Natthapak Khumkad eventually decided to slaughter all crocodiles in the farm.
