Thousands in US receive spam text from their own mobile numbers

San Francisco: A leading telecom carrier in the US heard thousands of its users complaining of spam texts coming to their phones on Tuesday.

The bizarre side is they received the texts from their own numbers baffling the telecom giant Verizon Wireless, reports The Verge. The company suspects "bad actors" behind the spam.

Some users found the link leading them to Channel One Russia, a Russian state media network.

Verizon has no indication of this "fraudulent activity" originating from Russia, the report said.

The random spoofed texts soon appeared to be efforts targeting the telecom carrier.

Verizon spokesperson acknowledged its users receiving spam texts, according to The Verge.

As well as engaging with US law enforcement to identify the source, the company is working to block these messages.

Meanwhile, US companies are on high alert against cyber-security attack from Russia-backed hackers. US- Russia relations have further strained after US sanctions on Russia.

The company believes that spam is generated by external bad actors having no link to the company.

US President Joe Biden had spoken last week about the growing Russian cyber threat to the US.

With Russia exploring cyber-attacks, Biden said, the US would use "every tool" to prevent such move.
