New York: Elon Musk’s auto wing Tesla is recalling nearly all of its vehicles sold in the US after a federal authority found defect with their autopilot systems, Aljazeera reported.
The company will have to haul in more than two million cars to set right autopilot system to avoid safety issues.
The carmaker on Wednesday said that the autopilot software system used in the cars “may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse”.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), probing the autopilot function for more than two years, said the action is an example of improving safety.
‘Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety but only when it is deployed responsibly,’ said a spokesperson reportedly said.
The largest-ever recall for Tesla comes as the development of self-driving vehicles face ‘series of snags over safety concerns’.
However, Tesla said it will install new safeguards and fix defects.
The automaker will recall its models including Y, S, 3 and X launched between October 5, 2012, and December 7, 2023.
Meanwhile, Speaking at US House of Representatives, acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson expressed happiness at Tesla’s vehicle recalling.
The US agency began probing Tesla’s autopilot function in August 2021 following reports of several fatal crashes when vehicles were on autopilot, she said.
Driverless cars, always praised as the fruits of exciting technological advancement, are recently reported to be having issues.
Most recently in October, self-driving car firm Cruise’s testing was suspended after California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) raised safety concerns.
