Mummified body of US mountaineer revealed 22 years after vanishing

Lima, Peru: The body of an American mountaineer emerged from a snow peak in Peru 22 years after he vanished, news agency AFP reported.

William Stampfl was reported missing in June 2002, aged 59, while scaling a snowy peak in Peru.

More than two decades later his preserved body emerged when ice melt from the impact of climate change, said police.

William Stampfl was found missing just as his team got buried in an avalanche on the mountain Huascaran standing more than 6.700 meters high.

His remains emerged after ice melt on the Cordillera Blanca range of the Andes.

It is reported that his body, clothes, harness and boots were found to be preserved by freezing cold, according to the report.

Finding his passport among his possessions helped police identify the body.

Meanwhile, the body of an Israeli hiker was found here in May almost a month after he vanished.

An Italian mountaineer was found dead last month when he fell while climbing another Andean peak here.
