Middle East tensions: UAE downs 16 ballistic missiles and 42 drones

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Ministry of Defence said on Sunday that the country’s air defence systems intercepted 16 ballistic missiles and 42 drones launched from Iran, amid continuing regional tensions. Authorities confirmed that no dangerous incidents or new injuries were reported in connection with these interceptions.

The latest figures add to a growing tally since the escalation began. According to official data, the UAE has so far intercepted 414 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,914 drones. Despite the high number of aerial threats, casualties have largely resulted from falling debris and related incidents rather than direct strikes.

Officials reported that 11 people have died in such incidents, including three military personnel, while the total number of injured has reached 178. Among the injured are five Indian nationals who were affected in a recent incident on Saturday.

Authorities have reiterated calls for public caution, urging residents to rely only on verified official information and to avoid spreading unconfirmed reports. People have also been warned against approaching or handling debris from intercepted projectiles and advised to immediately alert emergency services if such objects are found.

The defence ministry said it remains fully prepared to counter any threats, stressing its commitment to safeguarding national security, stability and sovereignty.
