Jerusalem: Nearly 1,200 senior Israeli air force veterans have urged the top legal officials to stand against the incoming government and called it a "danger."
In the letter written to the chief of Israel's Supreme Court and other top officials, signatories including the former chief of staff said the "alliance of religious and ultranationalist parties threatens Israel’s future." It said that they share the fear that the democratic state of Israel is in danger, reported Arab News.
The veterans said the legal officials are the "final line of defense" and urged them to "do everything in reach to stop the disaster affecting the country." They added that the signatories come from all strata of society and the political spectrum.
Three former fighter pilots - Dan Halutz (military chief from 2005-2007), Avihu Ben-Nun (former commander of the air force), and Amos Yadlin (former head of military intelligence) - are among the signatories.
The letter is being written days before the new government is set to take the office. In the November 1 elections, former PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultra-Orthodox and far-right partners won a parliamentary majority. The coalition negotiations are not yet completed but Netanyahu has already reached a series of deals that will grant his far-right partners authority over national force and settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.
Netanyahu is expected to take office on Thursday.
